    Monopoly vs. Pringles

Are they brothers? Or perhaps they came from the same logo designer. ;)

    Tuesday, March 15, 2011

Can't believe i survived my 1st day of work. I seriously have no idea what i am supposed to do at all. So so so so lost.

I feel cheated somehow though. This job seems more like an aspect of internal audit instead of accounting.

    Batam Island (7/3/2011 - 8/3/2011)

Baby and I went for a 2 days and 1 night Batam Trip for a short getaway before i start working next week. We went to Batam because my sister went last year and she told me that the massage is very cheap there.

    Some information about Batam Island.
    1. It is an Indonesian island
    2. The local currency is Indonesian Rupiah. While SGD is accepted in spas, hotels, and malls located near the ferry terminals, the rates might not be very good, so be sure to bring sufficient IDR
    3. The time difference is 1 hour, with Indonesia 1 hour behind Singapore. Meaning if it's 8am in Singapore, it's 7am in Batam

We decided to take the 840am ferry from Singapore Cruise Centre so i reached Harbourfront at 8am to get the tickets, but the tickets were sold out, so we had to wait for the next ferry at 930am. Hence, we went a place called "Prata" for prata. The prata is not cheap (S$1 per pc) but it is so much bigger than the prata from Jalan Kayu, which costs the same. The curry is not as good as Jalan Kayu though.

Here's the prata, which is really comparable to Jalan Kayu's. Please pardon the half eaten piece under the complete prata, which can be seen in the picture, as i was too hungry and started eating once it arrived. :)

Soon, we boarded the ferry to Batam. We took the ferry from a company called BatamFast, as it was recommended to us by an uncle we met at the Singapore Cruise Centre last friday, when we went to check out the price of the tickets.

Scenery on our way to Batam.

When we reached the island at Batam Centre Ferry Terminal, which is one of the many ferry terminals on the island, we approached a taxi counter and they quoted us IDR50,000 (S$7) to our hotel at Nagoya.

We stayed in I hotel, located in Nagoya (Van!! I was at Nagoya too!! Haha), which is the town area of Batam, and we got the room from Agoda at S$108 per night. I know it may seem a little too expensive for a room on Batam but i am rather particular about the room i stay in when i go for holidays, and i will make the effort to read reviews from several websites, as well as check if there are bathtubs available in the hotel rooms. I can even go to the extent of sending emails to the hotels to check if there are bathtubs. Haha.

The hotel was indeed as good as the reviews i have read said it it is! The security was very good, as there was a security check at the entrances for all vehicles that enters the hotel compounds, including taxis, and also, you need access keys to go to your room level.

The check in procedure was fast, and we were granted early check in as we went on a Monday, which i think is super off-peak. The staff at the reception also very polite, and we were served pink guava juice for our welcome drink.

Eventhough the hotel was rather expensive, both of us agreed that we will go back again is we ever go to Batam in the future.

    Pictures of our room...

Bathtub!!! The hotel also provided a comb, which most hotels doesn't provide nowadays. I remember forgetting to bring my comb for one of the holidays and i had to go a few days without combing my hair! I did bring my hair brush this time though, so the comb was brought home by baby as a "souvenir". Haha.

I opened the curtains and i immediately saw the pool from our room! There wasn't anyone swimming in the pool, and the pool looks splendid!! And the water looks clean as well. I hate dirty pool water, like those in the public pools.

A hill right in front of the hotel. I think it is the Nagoya hill, but i am not too sure.

We went to explore the pool area, before we head out for lunch. There is a jacuzzi in the pool area.

The pool!! There were 2 ang mohs swimming when we went down and they are actually looking the at view, which can be seen from my room as well and is not a very nice view. The weather was freaking hot hence, i deeply regret not bringing my swimwear for this trip.

There is a spa and a gym on the same level as the pool. The gym looks very well equipped. I have read from the reviews and noted that many of the tourists who stayed in I Hotel were actually at Batam for business trips. Hence, they may need to stay for periods longer than 1 week, and maybe they will want a work out when they are here. These people will be damn happy with this gym, that has everything! It's not very good to jog along the roads in Batam as the air pollution is rather bad, and there are no proper pavements for people to walk on.

The Nagoya Hill Shopping Centre, which is located almost right next to our hotel. In between the hotel and the mall is a construction site. The mall is huge and is the place where we spent most of our time at.

We had lunch in one of the restaurants in the shopping mall. There are no food courts in the mall, but a street with many many restaurants, which many locals patron as well. Other then this street, the rest are fast food restaurants located inside the mall. We wanted to try to local Indonesian food instead of settling our meals in fast food restaurants.

They have a special sitting area, where diners have to sit on the cushions on the floor. No footwear is allowed in that area.

    Freshly squeezed apple juice!

Some hot and spicy seafood soup, which was too salty, but there were plenty of seafood in the small bowl of soup! Many squids (my favourite) and prawns.

Stir fried kang kong with garlic.

Ayam Penyet, their very local food.

We also ordered a fried rice later, because baby says it was too little for him. But then, it became too much for the 2 of us and we ended up being too full for the massage we had planned for after a supposedly light lunch.

Anyway, the food is very cheap in Batam. We bought the Rupiahs at S$1 = IDR6,750, which makes anyone a millionaire in Batam, and the total cost of our lunch is at follows:

    Seafood Soup: IDR28,000
    Ayam Penyet: IDR12,000
    Kangkong: IDR13,000
    Apple Juice: IDR9,000
    Seafood Fried Rice: IDR16,000
    Total: IDR85,800 (S$ 12.71, including 10% GST)

So cheap and value for money, because we were both damn full after lunch!

This is the food street i haven mentioned earlier. Very quiet because we had lunch rather early, since our usual lunch time is 1 hour earlier than the Indonesian's.

As we were too full for massage after lunch, we decided to take a walk around the area. We spotted a very special restaurant that looked like a cruise. We didn't have a chance to dine in there.

We went to Hypermart, which is a hypermart, in the mall and bought drinks. The Yakult (5 bottles) costs IDR7,000, which is only slight over S$1, and we soon find out why is it so. The bottle is so small and cute! It's even smaller than my hand.

Us and our small and cute bottle of Yakult.

Soon, we went for our spa. We chose the most value for money package, by comparing several packages from different shops located near the mall. The one we went to was Everyday Spa, which had rather nice ambience, but the couple room was located at the top floor and we had to walk up several flights of stairs to the couple room.

The package included foot bath, aromatherapy massage, body scrub, body mask and milk bath, and the package costs less than S$50 per person. It's rather cheap as compared to Singapore's but it was quite disappointing. Perhaps we shouldn't have chosen the cheapest shop.

After spa, my father called and asked us for dinner together. He was there for a business trip, but he did not stay with his workers on the island. He had planned to return via the last ferry for the day.

He told us to take the taxi to this restuarant called "555" and said the taxi driver will definitely know where. Turns out, the hotel staff told us that the restaurant (Golden Prawn 555) is in fact the best seafood restaurant on the island. We took the hotel limousine to the restaurant and we were charged IDR80,000 (S$11.85).

I guess the seafood is the best there because it's all live seafood! The staff at the restaurant will catch the one you selected and cook it for you. But my dad said that he had been cheated several times, where the kitchen swaped their chosen seafood for a smaller one.

The clams are huge! This is baby's hand holding the clam.

Live crabs. Unlike Singapore's they have a much larger area to play.

My dad chose 3 huge crabs for us, his friends and his workers. There are only 2 in this picture.

One fish. I kind of think this fish is rather pitiful because it struggled alot when it was caught! o poor thing!

There were sharks and they were all more than 1m long! I wonder how many people are required to finish one shark.

And turtles. Who on earth will eat them?? They are endangered for god sake!! I totally disapprove anyone eating them.

Some shell bigger than my hand! I have never seen them in Singapore restaurants.

Finally at night, it was time for my bath! I have brought the Hello Kitty bath powder Van bought for me from Japan.
    The contents of the bag.

This looks like a crime scene, but it's actually how it looks like when i poured the powder into the bath tub. The smell was very strong when i smelled the bag but it wasn't after i have filled the tub. Perhaps i have filled the tub with too much water.

After bathing, we watched the last few episodes of bleach on the bed. There were alot of twists in the last few episodes, like how Ichimaru Gin turned against Aizen and how Aizen can't be killed by Ichimaru. And i still don't understand how did Ichigo get so strong such that he was able to almost-kill Aizen and how Aizen was trapped by the man in the hat, whom i don't remember his name eventhough he is an important figure in Bleach.

I think it's because the Japanese was not translated properly into English subtitles. Like when you watch English movies and you know that the Chinese subtitles doesn't really reflect what the characters are saying.

A special drink we bought from Hypermart.

This is the stretch of road we have to walk when we go to mall and back to our hotel. It's more scary when there are motorbikes travelling beside the cars, and very very close to us. I kept imagining that they will snatch my bags. Haha.

At the hotel lobby, waiting for the hotel staff to retrieve his phone charger, which he had left in the hotel room after we had checked out. Extra thumbs-up for the hotel staff regarding this matter! They were very polite and efficient in helping to find his charger. We were very grateful to them and very very pleased with their service. Definitely going to recommend this hotel to anyone who goes there.

On the ferry back to Singapore. He's playing Plants vs Zombies, and ignoring me.

Last photo. I look DAMN FAT in this photo so i must really start to diet!!

That's all for our short and relaxing trip to Batam.

    Random Updates
    • I have gotten a new job as an Accountant with SIA
I will be starting work on 15 March 2011. It's not a very good time to start work as the company's financial year end is on 31 March, which means i will be going in for the year end close. Hopefully there are very nice people who will guide me in my new position. :)

I am also looking forward to all the great staff benefits!! Heh heh.
    • I have gotten a new flat, which most people should know, and we have paid for the house 5% down payment yesterday!
The total down payment should be 10%, but the other 5% of the cost price of the house will be deducted only when we have gotten the keys to out flat, and by then, we will need to produce our Marriage Certificate!

However, we will not be getting married any time soon, as the estimated date when we will get the keys is 2015. But the very nice uncle who served us told us that for some projects, if the building process is very smooth, we may get the keys in 2013, which will be a big shocker for us as we are not planning to get married so soon. No $$.

    ----------End of updates----------

I have dug up all the polaroid photos i have taken over the years, which are not many, scanned them, and saved them into my thumb drive. This is so that, if i lose the hard copies, which i hope i won't as i have kept them in a very safe place, i will still have the soft copies as mementos.

These are taken during Meixin's 21st birthday, many years ago, because we're all so old now. Haha.

This is taken during KPMG Unit 016 (when we were still called 016) Christmas Dinner 2009. During the Christmas Dinner 2010, i was in Australia, and i had already paid the Rec club fund! If i had known that i was going to quit, i wouldn't have paid my share, since i did not go for any of the department events after i paid the fund.

This is the most recent photo taken with my Secondary School babes. Please pardon my 小小彬 hair in this photo. I told the hair dresser i do NOT want to have bangs, but he somehow thought that his opinion is more important than mine.

Taken years ago, before Van went to Japan, and they are my 1st polaroid photos taken!! I still remember the camera was given to her by Frederick's father. We had dinner with her and Frederick when these photos were taken and throughout the meal, Frederick did not talk to us. Haha. Awkward.

    That's all!
